Economic Perspective

Global dimming creates major economic challenges in Korea by reducing agricultural productivity, increasing food prices, raising healthcare costs, and disrupting industrial stability. Aerosols and fine dust affect sunlight, climate patterns, and public health, leading to crop losses, labor productivity decline, infrastructure damage, and growing economic uncertainty. As a result, global dimming should be understood not only as an environmental issue, but also as a long-term economic systems challenge affecting food security, public health, and national economic sustainability.

Agricultural Loss and Food Insecurity

Global dimming can reduce agricultural productivity in Korea by decreasing the amount of sunlight available for photosynthesis. Aerosols such as sulfate particles scatter and reflect solar radiation, lowering surface sunlight and altering cloud formation patterns. Because sunlight is essential for crop growth, reduced solar radiation can slow plant development and decrease final crop yields. These changes may threaten food security, increase food prices, and create economic pressure on agricultural industries. As climate and atmospheric conditions become more unstable, global dimming may also increase long-term uncertainty in Korea’s food and agricultural systems.

Food Price Inflation and Supply Instability

Global dimming can contribute to food price increases by reducing agricultural productivity and disrupting market supply systems. In South Korea, reduced sunlight lowers crop growth and increases energy costs for greenhouse farms that rely on supplemental lighting systems. As agricultural yields decline, market supply becomes more unstable, placing upward pressure on consumer food prices. In addition, South Korea’s low food self-sufficiency rate increases dependence on imported crops, making the country more vulnerable to global food price increases caused by worldwide climate and agricultural disruptions. Therefore, global dimming can create long-term economic pressure on both food systems and household living costs in Korea.

Public Health Costs and Labor Productivity Loss

Aerosols and particulate matter that contribute to global dimming also create significant public health and economic burdens. Fine dust pollution is closely linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, increasing healthcare costs and pressure on national health systems. According to the World Bank, the global cost of health damage caused by air pollution is estimated at approximately $6 trillion annually, equal to nearly 5% of global GDP. In South Korea, rising air pollution may increase medical expenses, sick leave, and premature deaths, while also reducing labor productivity and the overall available workforce. As a result, global dimming and aerosol pollution should be understood not only as environmental problems, but also as long-term economic and public health challenges.

Climate Disruption and Economic Instability

Global dimming can cause major economic losses by disrupting regional climate and precipitation patterns. Aerosols such as black carbon alter atmospheric heating, cloud formation, and rainfall systems, particularly affecting the Asian monsoon cycle. As a result, unexpected droughts, torrential rainfall, and extreme weather events can increase infrastructure damage, logistics disruptions, and recovery costs. In South Korea, changes in seasonal precipitation patterns create growing uncertainty across agriculture, transportation, and industrial sectors. Therefore, aerosol-driven climate instability should be understood not only as an environmental issue, but also as a long-term economic risk affecting national infrastructure and economic stability.
