Global dimming, mainly caused by anthropogenic aerosols such as sulfates and particulate matter, reduces surface sunlight and harms photosynthesis, agriculture, food security, and economic stability. However, these aerosols also reflect sunlight and partially mask greenhouse gas warming. Therefore, reducing aerosols must be done carefully, balancing cleaner air with climate stability to avoid a sudden “climate shock” from rapidly unmasking global warming.

It promotes collaboration through research programs, partnerships with other regions, and innovation in agriculture. These efforts aim to improve sustainability, increase agricultural productivity, and strengthen resilience to climate change.

Scientific monitoring is essential for understanding global dimming in Korea because aerosols affect sunlight, clouds, temperature, and precipitation in complex ways. Satellites, ground observations, and climate models help track these effects and support better climate policies.

Climate Adaptation and
Managed Emission Reduction
Global dimming creates serious climate risks by reducing solar radiation and weakening the water cycle. To respond effectively, Korea needs both climate adaptation and carefully managed emission reduction strategies. Measures such as drought resistant crops, efficient water use, and climate resilient agriculture can help protect food security and environmental stability. At the same time, aerosol emissions should be reduced gradually alongside greenhouse gas reduction to prevent sudden acceleration of global warming.

Reforming Fossil Fuel Pricing
From an economic perspective, aerosol pollution can be reduced by making fossil fuel use and industrial emissions more expensive. Policies such as fossil fuel subsidy reform, carbon pricing, emissions trading, and pollution taxes encourage industries to use cleaner energy and reduce pollutants like PM2.5 [particulate matter 2.5], black carbon, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides. The revenue can also support clean technology, public transportation, and air quality monitoring.
